French Bulldog Tail Pocket Infection! How To Heal It?

French bulldog tail pocket infection is one of the most common issues that can happen to your pooch if you don’t perform regular cleaning. French bulldog tail might be cute and unique, but it also has one hidden place called a tail pocket. Since it can become stinky, itchy, painful, and irritated due to collected debris and feces, we decided to provide you with tips on how to keep it healthy and clean.

French bulldog tail pocket infection- Why does it occur?

Aside from numerous adorable folds, wrinkled faces, and erected ears, Frenchies are notorious for one not so thrilling feature. Their tail pockets are probably the stinkiest spots you will find on their bodies.

Unlike other dog breeds, Frenchies have naturally cropped tails. Besides, they have hidden tail pockets that are prone to collecting feces. As a result, this can lead to an infection and the inability to release stools. It’s also important to mention that the ‘depth’ of a pocket is different in every dog. Therefore, while some Frenchies will have minor problems, others can develop severe infections if left intreated.

How to clean the French bulldog tail pocket?

French bulldog tail pocket infection is followed by red and swollen dog’s anal opening. Besides it smells bad, the skin can be so irritated that will look wet and almost bloody. To keep your dog’s tail pocket clean and healthy, you can use wet baby wipes or wet cloth. Before starting the procedure, you can also put surgical gloves on your hand. Gently clean the area around the anal opening, and find the pocket placed under the root of the tail. You’ll simply be surprised at how much dirt you will extract from that small part of your dog’s body.

If your Frenchie has an inverted tail pocket, then you can use ear cotton sticks to reach it. To disinfect the spot, you can use the povidone-iodine ointment which is completely harmless to use.

How to treat the French bulldog tail pocket infection?

Although I always advise my clients to visit their vets in case of any change in their dog’s behavior and health, in mild cases of irritation you can treat this issue at home. Since this condition is always followed by itchiness, it will be helpful to lubricate the damaged skin by Panthenol cream. Of course, before applying any product, it’s essential to clean the area around the anal opening and pocket with povidone-iodine ointment. After you’ve wiped the cleaned area with a dry cotton ball, you can apply the Panthenol cream daily.

I also need to note that no infection can pass without the use of antibiotic therapy. Vets usually prescribe antibiotic creams that affect a large spectrum of bacteria and gentamicin cream is one of them.

Since your pet will also experience itchiness, the vet will also prescribe you a topical corticosteroidal cream to ease the symptoms. However, I don’t recommend you to buy any type of your choice because prolonged usage can cause side effects.

Aside from the previously mentioned tips, you can also daily use diaper rash creams such as Sudocrem. It’s rich in zinc-oxid that is known as one of the best ingredients for treating rashes. Apply a thin layer around your dog’s anal opening and tail pocket after every cleaning. It’s one of the best routines to prevent irritations.
