French Bulldog grooming demands

One of the many pleasant characteristics of French Bulldogs is that they are generally a clean breed. What do I mean by this? Well, they are not the kind of dogs who enjoy making a total pig of them selves, during their walks or outside playing time. When it comes to house braking and keeping your house or apartment clean, it is up to you to train your dog proper behavior and potty habits. Since Frenchies are usually very good students, this will be a peace of cake, as long as you start while they are young.

When it comes to dog hygiene, like any other dogs, they have certain grooming needs. Just to be clear, Frenchies are quite high on a list of low- maintenance dogs and keeping them clean will take very little of your time and effort.

Frenchies have short, smooth and shiny coat and they don’t shed much. A weekly brush is all it takes to keep their coat shiny and healthy and to prevent larger amounts of hair on the floor, since this is how you remove most of the dead or loose coat.

There is no general rule for how often you should bathe your dog. Some suggest you should bathe them once a month or once every two months. Others say you should do it when ever it seems necessary and when you decide it is “bathing time”, based on how dirty or smelly your dog is at the moment. Regular dog shampoo should be just fine and make sure to rinse it properly. If your Frenchie has allergies or sensitive skin, we suggest you use a hypo-allergenic shampoo you can buy in a pet store or ask your vet to recommend one.
When it comes to your dog’s ears, cleaning them once a month should be enough. Depending on how fast their nails grow, clipping them once every four to eight weeks is enough and you can also check their anal glands, coat and skin from time to time, to make sure they are in a healthy condition.

It is no secret that Frenchies have sensitive eyes. They have many flaps and wrinkles around their eyes and nose area, so it is especially important to keep this area as clean as possible. The wrinkles are most often moist and prone to growing red yeast, which also produce bad odors. Moisture makes the area red and raw, so you must keep this area dry and clean. There is a variety of facial cleaners you can use for this purpose.

When it comes to your dog’s teeth, brushing them several times a week will keep them and gums healthy and prevent your dog from loosing his teeth prematurely, later in life. It is important to use tooth paste for dogs from the pet store, because human tooth paste usually contains fluoride, which is extremely poisonous to dogs. Chewing bones and safe chewing toys are also helpful for cleaning your dog’s teeth and keeping them strong.
